The Lester (Two Rivers) Public Library team won the Manitowoc-Calumet Library System’s Battle of the Books competition for the first time in the 19-years the teen reading program has existed.
The competition between 7th-12th grade students took place on September 8th at Manitowoc Public Library. Four teams competed, representing libraries in Brillion, Manitowoc, Two Rivers and New Holstein. This year a new format, Kahoot! was used, and proved to be a welcome change for the teens.
The Brillion team came in second place, and the New Holstein team took third place.
Battle of the Books is a trivia contest for students to test their knowledge of eight books, selected by library staff, which they have read over the summer. This year’s books consisted of a graphic novel: Savage Beard of She Dwarf by Kyle Latino, a non-fiction: Folding Tech by Karen Latchana Kenney, a historical fiction: Kent State by Deborah Wiles, two science fiction/fantasy: Burn by Patrick Ness and Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky by Kwame Mbalia, a horror: Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall, a mystery: The Inheritance Games by Lynn Barns, and a fiction: Don’t Read the Comments by Eric Smith.
The Battle emcee was Julia Lee, the Youth Services Manager at Manitowoc Public Library. All participating teams put their knowledge to the test and did a fantastic job competing all the way through the finale. Congratulations on all your hard work!
